The world through the eyes of a puppy is an exciting and seemingly never ending journey of new experiences, smells, journeys and adventures. Puppies love the excitement of their first interaction with a new squeaky toy or trying to predict the direction of the bounce of an unpredictable tennis ball.  But as puppies grow into adolescents and eventually adults, they begin to try to make sense of their surroundings.  During this process, they search for order and direction. Specifically, they want to understand where they fit in.

A dog’s place in the family hierarchy depends much on them. Some dogs are submissive, allowing the aging family cat to reign over the household kingdom, while others are inherently dominant, relying on generations of finely honed instincts and an innate compass to steer them toward the top of the hierarchy. But ultimately, humans are at the top of the pecking order, or at least we should be. The problem is, many of us don’t know how to establish ourselves and effectively communicate this to our dogs.

It is said that a happy dog is a dog that understands its place in the world. Whether this is alpha, beta, or zeta. The certainty of knowing his place offers a sense of comfort, devoid of the anxiety that comes with the uncertainty of always trying to guess or try to establish his place in the social structure. This anxiety can lead to bad habits if left unresolved. Defiance, destructive behavior, aggression, or general disregard to our instructions are the manifestation of this uncertainty.

All dogs can be taught, or rather, helped to understand where exactly they fit in. All that is needed is an understanding of how to communicate our desires and expectations to our dogs in a manner that makes sense to them.

At Northern VA’s Healthy Hound Playground in Sterling VA, one-on-one, hands on training with your dog can help you establish the relationship that you wish to have with your dog. Generally, through a handful of sessions, we can help you understand what is needed to begin a new relationship with your dog. You deserve to have a better relationship with your dog.  And your dog deserves the comfort and peace that comes with a clearer understanding of what is expected of them.

It’s never too late to improve your relationship and gain a better experience with your dog.

Healthy Hound Playground also offers expert doggie day care and boarding at their premier facility, serving all of Northern Virginia, specifically, the following localities: Herndon, Sterling, Chantilly, Centreville, Reston, Ashburn, and Dulles.
